A job board is the searchable list of job postings you publish on the Portal for job seekers. This article explains how to create and configure a board, including which jobs it lists, which fields visitors can search and see, and how results and opened postings appear. To accept applications and manage the related email, see Online Applications for a Job Board.
What It Controls
A job board controls:
- Which postings it lists, with only active postings included by default
- Which fields visitors can search, and which fields they see in search results and opened postings
- Whether visitors see a search form or a plain list, how many results appear per page, and how long Rhythm keeps results before rebuilding them
- Whether visitors can search by distance
- Whether the board accepts online applications, as described in the linked article above
Your Rhythm account can have more than one job board.
Where to Find It
Go to Career Center › Setup › Jobs › Boards to view your job boards. Select Create Job Board to add one, or open an existing board to change it.
Prerequisites
You need the permission your administrator grants for Career Center setup.
Warning
Saving a job board takes effect immediately. There is no draft, preview, or publish step. Saving also clears the board's kept search results, so the next Portal search uses your new settings right away.
Creating a Job Board
A new board starts with online applications turned on, a default application email, the search display, a 5-minute rebuild period, 10 results per page, and four searchable fields: employer name, job name, city, and state.
- Enter a Name. Rhythm creates the identifier from the name, and you can set it only while you create the board.
- Choose the fields visitors can search under Searchable Fields.
- Choose any Additional Fields you want to make available to a custom layout.
- Set the display and entry options described below.
- Select Save Changes.
The Settings
| Setting | Options | Default | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| How should this job board be displayed? | Search, List | Search | Search shows visitors a search form. List shows entries without a search form and hides the Searchable Fields and Radius/Distance Search cards, while keeping their saved values. |
| Rebuild period (minutes) | Any number, at least 5 | 5 | Sets how long the board reuses kept search results before rebuilding them. |
| Page size | Any number, at least 10 | 10 | Sets how many results appear on each page. |
| This is a public directory | On, off | Off | Marks the board for public pages. Nothing currently uses this setting to change access. |
| Searchable Fields | Fields from the job posting query, reorderable | Four defaults on a new board | These are the fields a visitor can search. Any field you make searchable also appears in every entry. |
| Additional Fields | Fields from the job posting query | None | Makes extra fields available to a custom results or entry layout without making those fields searchable. |
| Radius/Distance Search | On, off, plus a postal-code field and a list of distances | Off | Lets visitors search within a distance of a postal code. |
| Rule-Based Job Board Constraints | On, off, plus rules | Off | Replaces the built-in active-postings-only rule with your own rules. |
| Expression-Based Job Board Constraints | On, off, plus an expression | Off | Adds an advanced filter using Rhythm's expression syntax. |
| Custom Sorting | On, off, plus sort fields | Off | Replaces the default result order. |
| Custom Search Results Template | On, off, plus a template | Off | Replaces the default layout for each search result row. |
| Job Board Entry | Nothing, default layout, or custom template | Default layout | Controls what happens when a visitor opens a result. |
| Status | Active, Inactive | Active | An inactive board is hidden from this setup list by default. The board still searches, opens entries, and accepts applications. |
If you want the board's listing order to match the order your Career Center query returns, such as sorting by post date, turn on Custom Sorting and choose that field.
Choosing Fields
The board offers only fields described by the job posting query. If a field disappears from the query, the Portal removes it from the board without showing an error. When you make a field searchable, Rhythm also publishes it in every entry, so visitors cannot search by a field without also seeing it.
Warning
An organization field on a job board shows the posting contact's organization first. If the contact has no organization, it shows the posting's own organization.
Which Postings a Board Lists
By default, a job board lists only postings with an active status. When you turn on Rule-Based Job Board Constraints, your rules replace that default entirely.
Warning
Turning on your own filter with Rule-Based Job Board Constraints removes the built-in active-only rule. If your rules do not also check for active status, the board can list expired, suspended, or draft postings. Add a status condition to your rules if you still want to show only active postings.
The board's filter controls search results only. It does not control whether someone can open a specific posting, send a message, or apply.
Warning
In some accounts, a rule condition that filters on the job posting's Process field has caused the Portal job search to fail outright. Visitors see an "Unable to search directory" error instead of results. If a board's search stops working after you add a rule based on Process, remove or replace that condition and search again.
Layouts
You can keep both layouts at their defaults, or replace either one:
- Custom Search Results Template changes how each results row looks.
- Job Board Entry controls what a visitor sees after opening a result: nothing beyond the search result, the default layout, or your own custom template.
The default entry layout is a simple card. It shows the job's name, employer, location, a Learn More link when the posting has a URL custom field, post date, expiration date shown only when the posting has a post date, the posting's identifier, and its internal reference code.
To write or change a custom template, open the board at Career Center › Setup › Jobs › Boards. Then edit the HTML and CSS directly in the Custom Search Results Template or Job Board Entry field. Within the Job Board Entry template, you can move the markup for the job body field to control where the description appears on the page.
A search-results template and an entry template use different merge fields. A search-results template uses flat field names such as name, employer_name, location__city, location__state, and _search_distance. An entry template reads an object instead, such as jobPosting.name, jobPosting.employer_name, jobPosting.location.city, jobPosting.location.state, jobPosting.location.postal_code, jobPosting.careers_job_postings__url__c, jobPosting.post_date, jobPosting.expiration_date, jobPosting.id, and jobPosting.internal_reference_code.
Warning
A job body field can display as raw HTML markup instead of rendered text in a custom Job Board Entry template. Output it with the safe filter, for example {{ jobPosting.body | safe }}, so the description renders as formatted text. Job Body does not always format correctly on its own, so treat the safe filter as the fix to apply rather than a one-time correction.
Format a date custom field with the date filter, for example {{ jobPosting.careers_jobpostings_date_c | date("DD MMMM YYYY") }}. Moment-style helper syntax is not supported here and can keep the entry page from loading or leave the field blank.
Format a currency custom field with a numeral filter instead of outputting the raw merge field. For example, use {{ custom_field__c | numeral("$0,0") }} so the value displays with a dollar sign and comma separators. Percentage custom fields need the same treatment: format with {{ percentage_field__c | numeral("0%") }} so a stored value of zero shows as 0% instead of appearing blank. Use that pattern only when the stored value is a true fraction, such as .4 for 40%. When the field stores a whole number instead, such as 40, format it as %{{ percentage_field__c | numeral("0,0") }} so it still shows a percent sign.
Warning
When a custom template shows a custom field conditionally, close each conditional with exactly one closing brace and a matching {% endif %} placed before the surrounding HTML container closes. A missing or mismatched {% endif %} can leave the entry page loading indefinitely instead of rendering.
If a Custom Search Results Template uses Font Awesome icon classes and the icons appear as boxes instead of icons, try replacing the fa-solid prefix with fas in the template markup.
Radius Search
Turn on Radius/Distance Search when you want visitors to search within a distance of a postal code. Choose the field that holds the postal code for comparison, then choose the distances you want to offer.
Dependencies and Precedence
- A board needs your account's job posting query to be available. If the query fails to load, the board editor cannot open.
- Turning on Rule-Based Job Board Constraints takes priority over the default active-only rule, as described in the warning above.
- Every save clears kept search results, so visitors see any change on their next search.
Change Impact and How to Revert
Any setting change takes effect the next time a visitor searches the board; there is no delay. To revert a change, reopen the board and restore the previous values. Rhythm does not keep them automatically.
Permissions
Creating, changing, and deleting job boards requires the permission your administrator grants for Career Center setup. Portal users can read published job boards, but they cannot create, change, or delete one.
Validation and Errors
A board needs a name before you can save it. Deleting a board removes it immediately. Rhythm does not warn you if a Portal page still names that board, and that page then fails to load with a message that the directory could not be loaded. Before you remove a board, check your Portal pages first.
