An active job posting comes down automatically once its expiration date arrives. Rhythm checks for due postings once an hour across every account, so you do not need to close the posting yourself.
When a Posting Actually Comes Down
Rhythm compares the posting’s expiration date to the current date in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), not your account’s time zone. If your association is in the Americas, a posting can come down the evening before its printed expiration date because UTC has already moved to the next day.
The hourly check only expires a posting when both of these are true:
- The posting's status is
active. - The posting has an expiration date at all. A posting left without one never expires on its own.
A posting that is a draft, waiting for review, or already suspended stays as it is, even when its dates are far in the past. An active posting with no expiration date also stays live until someone changes it.
What Happens When a Posting Expires
When Rhythm finds a due posting, it sets the status to expired. If the posting is already expired, Rhythm does nothing else, so running the check twice on the same posting is harmless.
Whether the posting’s contact gets an email depends on the job posting process used to create that posting:
- If that process has the expiration email switched on, with a template, the contact is emailed once the posting is marked expired.
- If the process has no expiration email switched on, or the posting has no contact with an email address, no email is sent — the posting still expires either way.
- Only the automatic hourly expiry sends this email. Closing a posting in the Portal, or changing its status by hand elsewhere in the Console, does not trigger it.
Tip
Rhythm does not retry an email that fails to send. Because an expired posting no longer appears in the hourly check, a posting whose expiration email failed the first time will not get another attempt.
See Create, Edit, or Delete a Job Posting Directly for how to check or change a posting's status and dates yourself.
Example
An employer’s posting has an expiration date and is active. At the next hourly check after that date arrives, Rhythm sets the posting to expired. If the posting was created through a process with the expiration email turned on, the posting’s contact receives that email once the status changes. If not, the posting simply comes down with no message sent.
