A page template gives new pages their starting layout, including the header, navigation area, footer, and column structure. You design the template once in the visual designer, and every page created from it starts with that same frame. The template also marks where each page’s own content belongs.
What It Controls
A template sets the starting layout for every page created from it. Templates are shared across every site in your organization, but you design and preview them using the site currently selected in the Console.
The template controls the header and footer styling, so the template you choose when you create or clone a page affects how that page looks. If you want a new page to match an existing one, clone the page that already uses the template and design you want. Cloning brings that formatting over automatically, so you do not have to rebuild it.
Branding, such as the logo in a page header, can come from the template and the site’s linked CSS, not only from an image asset or page component. If you update a header image asset or component and the logo still looks wrong, check whether the template markup or a linked stylesheet still points to the old image. If the page’s own content includes explicit image markup, such as an image dropped directly into the page instead of inherited from the template, changing the template or a shared image asset will not update that image. Edit the page’s own content instead. If a logo looks too small on a listing page, you can usually resize or replace it yourself, but check the Asset Explorer first because more than one logo file can exist there and the wrong version may be in use.
Warning
A page template does not have a separate publish step like a custom component. Every change you save immediately affects new pages and feature installs that use the template, and you cannot revert a template.
Tip
Adding a component to a template affects only pages created from that template afterward. Pages that already use the template keep their current layout. To include the new component on those pages, add it to each page by hand.
