After you find something to buy, add it to your cart so you can review your order before checkout. This article explains how to add an item, choose an offering or recipient when needed, and update your cart.

Your cart can include any type of product Commerce sells. You can add a membership, a course, an event registration, and merchandise to the same cart, then check out with all of them in one order. You can also choose a different recipient for each item instead of sending everything to the same person.

This article covers the cart you build while shopping in the storefront. Carts created directly through the Commerce API use a separate, developer-facing process, and you cannot manage those carts in Console.

When to Use This

Use this after you choose an item and any required options. For help choosing versions and personalization, see Browse Items in the Store. To pay for the items in your cart, see Complete a Purchase in a Store.

Prerequisites

  • You must be signed in to add anything to your cart. You can browse while signed out, but Rhythm asks you to sign in when you try to add an item.

Add an Item to Your Cart

  1. From the item's page, choose any required version and personalization options.
  2. If the item is a membership package, course or exam offering, or event registration package, choose the specific offering or package you want.
  3. If you are buying the item for someone else, check I am purchasing this product for someone other than myself, then choose the recipient under Who should receive this item?. You see this option for memberships, courses, exams, and event registrations, but not for merchandise. Even for a signed-in member, there is no one-click way to get a free item without using the same add-to-cart and checkout flow.
  4. Select the add-to-cart button.

Result

Rhythm prices your cart with the new item included, then shows the updated cart total.

Tip

If you are not signed in when you try to add an item, Rhythm shows a Not Logged In message instead of adding the item and offers to take you to sign in. After you sign in, you return to the same product, but any options you chose are not kept, so you may need to choose them again. Rhythm sends you back to the product page instead of straight to your cart because your price and eligibility may change once you are signed in and identified as a member.

Review and Change Your Cart

  1. Select the cart button on the storefront to open your cart.
  2. Review each line's item, quantity, unit price, and total. For anything you are buying for someone else, also review the recipient's name.
  3. To change how many of an item you want, update the quantity and select Update Quantities.
  4. To remove a line entirely, select its remove icon.
  5. When you are ready, select Checkout.

Result

Rhythm re-prices your cart each time you change a quantity or remove a line, so Cart Total reflects what is currently in your cart.

Warning

The amount on the storefront's cart button can differ slightly from the total you see when you open your cart. The button shows your subtotal, while the cart page shows your total, which can include tax, shipping, and discounts.

Limits and Exceptions

  • Your cart lives in this browser only. It is tied to this browser and, after you sign in, to your contact. It does not follow you to another device or browser, and it does not survive if this browser's storage is cleared.
  • A cart is specific to one store. Adding items in one store does not affect a cart you started in another store.
  • Changing a quantity does not save until you select Update Quantities. If you navigate away or check out without selecting it, any typed but unsaved quantity changes are lost.
