When you check out a membership application, chapter or section dues, or an add-on, your association may let you enter a coupon code. This article explains what coupons can discount, how Rhythm calculates the discount, and why a code might not reduce your total.

Prerequisites

  • You need a coupon code from your association.

Tip

A coupon code from a membership application is not limited to that one transaction. Other people can use it, and it is not locked to any related course or certification purchase.

What a Coupon Can Discount

A coupon can discount only these kinds of order lines:

  • Membership packages
  • Chapter dues
  • Section dues
  • Add-ons

Coupons never discount other items on your order, no matter which code you enter. If your order includes an initiation fee as its own miscellaneous product instead of as part of an add-on, the coupon will not discount that fee line, even when it discounts everything else on the order. For the items coupons can discount, your association can limit a coupon to specific packages, chapters, sections, or add-ons, or to entire types of those items. A code that works for one item on your order does not always discount every eligible line.

Selecting Renew Automatically does not apply a coupon by itself. There is no option to apply a coupon automatically just because you chose auto-renewal. Some associations instead give auto-renewing members a lower price directly on the membership package, without using a coupon code.

How the Discount Is Calculated

Your association sets each coupon as either a fixed amount off or a percentage off. Either way, Rhythm takes the discount off each qualifying line as a whole, not per unit.

Depending on how your association set up the coupon, you see the discount in one of two ways:

  • On each qualifying line. Each line the coupon applies to is reduced directly, and that lower price appears on the line.
  • As one separate discount line. Your order shows one line for the coupon’s total discount across every line it affected, even when it discounted several different kinds of items.

If a coupon brings your balance due to $0.00, you can complete checkout without entering a payment method. Rhythm still creates or updates your membership and creates the membership application, just as it would for a paid order.

If you are paying on an installment plan, the coupon reduces the payment currently due instead of being spread evenly across future installments.

Tip

A fixed-amount coupon applied to an order after checkout, such as from the order's own options instead of when you redeemed it, may not reduce the order total the same way it would have at checkout. If a retroactive discount looks wrong, check with your association.

Why Your Coupon Code Might Not Give a Discount

What you might see Likely reason
Your order shows no discount, with no explanation The coupon is only for certain buyers, such as people joining for the first time or people renewing, and you are not in that group.
Your order shows no discount, with no explanation Your association has switched off the coupon.
Your code is rejected outright The code does not match any coupon your association has set up. Unlike a switched-off coupon, Rhythm treats this as an invalid code instead of accepting it with no discount.
Some, but not all, of your order is discounted The coupon applies only to certain packages, chapters, sections, or add-ons. Items outside those targets are never discounted, even by the same code.
Your code is accepted, but the discount shows as $0.00 You are eligible to use the code, but the coupon behind it does not discount the specific membership package on your order. Being able to enter a code does not mean it discounts your particular items.

Tip

If you believe a coupon code should have worked but it did not, contact your association. They can confirm whether the coupon is active, who can use it, and which items it discounts.
