Your Membership Overview in the Portal shows your membership and, if you belong to an organization, your organization’s membership. From this page, you can set up or cancel automatic renewal and print your ID card or certificate when your association offers those options.
A Portal account is not the same as a membership. Signing in gives you access to the Portal, while your Membership Overview shows whether you currently hold a membership.
Prerequisites
- You need to be signed in to the Portal.
See Your Membership
After you sign in and open your Membership Overview, you see your membership type, package, status, join and expiration dates, and any chapters, sections, or add-ons included with it. Your join and expiration dates are for reference only, so you cannot edit them from this page. If you belong to an organization that also has its own membership, that membership appears on the same page. When your membership is close to lapsing or has already lapsed, a banner explains the status and shows a task list with your next steps. You cannot choose when this banner appears because it is based on your membership’s termination date, not an earlier lapse date.
If your membership has expired, your Membership Overview may show a renewal option when one is available from your association’s records.
There is currently no way to add your Membership ID number as a field on this page.
Tip
If you act for an organization, this page shows only your own organization’s membership. You cannot use it to view another organization’s membership.
Set Up or Change Automatic Renewal
- From your Membership Overview, choose Set up My Auto Renewal if automatic renewal is not on yet, or Change My Auto Renewal Settings if you already have a saved card.
- Choose the card or bank account you want to use for automatic renewal.
- Save your change.
Result
Your membership renews automatically with the payment method you chose.
Warning
You must choose a payment method before you save. If you try to save without selecting one, the page asks you to choose a payment method and does not save your change.
Tip
The payment method on this page should match the one you chose for automatic renewal. If it shows a method you do not remember choosing, select your payment method again and save so the correct one is stored.
On your Membership Overview, this option is usually labeled Set up Auto Renewal, even when you are already enrolled. The same link opens your current settings so you can review or change them, not only turn automatic renewal on for the first time.
Your association controls whether this option appears, and some associations turn off self-service auto-renewal changes entirely. This option is meant to appear only when you have a membership that can renew automatically. If you see Set up Auto Renewal but do not hold a membership, that combination is unexpected, so check with your association instead of assuming automatic renewal is enabled. If you manage an organization’s membership instead of your own, automatic renewal can work a little differently and may depend on completing your organization’s renewal order rather than using this option directly. See Act for Your Organization's Membership for what your role can do.
Tip
You can turn automatic renewal on or off only here, or through a membership renewal process — not by editing the membership record directly in the Console.
You can also turn on automatic renewal from the payment page when you pay for your membership package in the Portal, if your association has enabled that option there. On that page, the checkbox to automatically renew your membership using the payment method you just entered may already be selected for you. Clear it if you do not want automatic renewal. Turning on automatic renewal during payment and turning it on later from your Membership Overview are the same feature; the only difference is when you choose to start it.
This payment page shows every payment method saved on your account, not just the one used for automatic renewal, so you can choose which one to use. Saving your change here updates only the payment method assigned to your membership’s automatic renewal. It does not change any other saved-payment defaults. You can also use this page to review your current card or replace it with a new one without turning automatic renewal on. If automatic renewal is currently off, replacing the card here does not turn it on by itself.
When you add or change a card here, your membership record updates with the new card right away. Your association’s staff can then access it, including in the payment information a later automatic-renewal billing run uses.
Paying an emailed invoice link directly does not offer an automatic-renewal option, so use the Portal and this page if you want automatic renewal. Paying for a renewal in the Portal also depends on there being an order or invoice to pay against. You may see a renewal invoice listed as a proforma invoice in your order history, so check there if you do not see it under Pay Open Invoices. When your membership renews automatically, you receive the standard receipt email for that payment, the same as any other Portal payment.
If Automatic Renewal Isn't Working as Expected
Tip
If your association has changed payment processors, or you updated your card somewhere else and it does not seem to be linked, open this option and save your payment method again to refresh the connection. This has also helped when saving other membership changes was blocked by a payment-related error.
Your current card or bank account may not appear here if it was originally linked through certain older payment processors, even though your membership is still set to renew automatically. If that happens, your membership can still renew using the card on file. Contact your association if you need to confirm which payment method is in use.
This payment-method management is available on the standard Membership Overview page. If your association uses a custom membership page instead, this option may not be available there.
Check Automatic Renewal Status Before You Cancel
A blue banner on your Membership Overview shows which saved payment method is currently used for automatic renewal. If you see that banner, automatic renewal is on for the card or account shown. Check that banner to confirm your current auto-renewal status before you cancel, because the cancel option appears whether or not automatic renewal is currently active.
Be Aware
If you set up automatic renewal here and later reopen this screen to save it again, your association's staff may not always see the updated card expiration date right away in the Console or in Membership queries. If your association tells you the record does not show what you expect after you have saved a payment method here, have them contact Support with the membership record.
Cancel Automatic Renewal
If you already have a saved card, you can manage your existing automatic renewal, including cancelling it, from the same auto renewal screen you use to set it up.
- From your Membership Overview, choose Change My Auto Renewal Settings.
- Choose the option to cancel automatic renewal.
- Confirm that you want to cancel it.
Result
Your membership no longer renews automatically, and your membership record’s automatic-renewal setting updates to show that it is now off. You see this option even when automatic renewal is already off.
Your Card Stays on File After You Cancel
Cancelling automatic renewal only turns off the automatic charge. The stored card or bank account you used for automatic renewal stays on your membership record. If you do not want that payment method stored, set up automatic renewal again with a different method, or contact your association. If you want to remove that stored payment method entirely, cancel automatic renewal first — a payment method tied to active automatic renewal cannot be deleted until you do.
Print Your ID Card or Certificate
When your membership is active and your association allows Portal printing, your Membership Overview shows options to print your membership ID card and, if your association uses certificates, your certificate. Your Membership ID appears on that printed ID card, which is currently the main place to find it in the Portal.
- From your Membership Overview, choose the option to print your ID card or your certificate.
- The document opens in a new browser tab.
Result
Your ID card or certificate opens as a document you can view, save, or print.
Tip
If your certificate prints with a missing or incorrect background, check your browser’s print settings and turn on background graphics. Some certificates need that setting to print correctly. Once it is on, printing should work as expected from then on.
If Printing Is Not Offered
These options appear only when your membership is active and your association has turned on ID cards or certificates for Portal printing. If you do not see them, your membership may not be active, or your association may not offer them in the Portal. Your association’s own Portal styling can also remove the certificate link. If it is missing for everyone, ask your association to check whether it was hidden this way before assuming certificates are not offered.
This certificate option covers only your association’s built-in membership certificate. A separate document, such as a sponsorship certificate, is not supported the same way. Even if your association uploaded one to a custom field on your record, there is no option to print it from here. The Print Membership ID Card label is also built into this page and cannot be renamed or added anywhere else in the Portal as a separate field.
If the document cannot be produced, you see a message saying the card or certificate could not be printed. Try again, and contact your association if the problem continues.
