Your association’s member directories can show your name and details so other members can find you. If your association offers directory choices, you can leave the directories entirely or stay listed and choose which details appear.
Prerequisites
- You are signed in to the Portal with a membership.
- Your association must turn on this choice for members who update their membership. If it has not, you will not see either option described here when you update your membership. Applying for membership uses a separate process, as described below.
Warning
If your membership shows a pending-order banner, you cannot change these settings or use your association’s member directory through the Portal until that order is resolved.
Leave the Directory Entirely
- In the Portal, open your membership and update its information.
- If your association allows members to leave the directory, you will see I do not want to be included in the membership directory. Tick it.
- Save your changes.
Result
You are removed from every directory search your association publishes, starting the next time each directory’s search results are refreshed.
Warning
Opting out removes you from directory searches, but someone who already has a link to your entry might still be able to open it directly or message you through it. If you need to make sure people cannot find or contact you through a directory at all, ask your association how its directories handle direct links to opted-out members.
If your association only lets members choose which fields appear, you will not see this checkbox. You will only see the field choices described below.
Choose Which of Your Details Appear
Instead of leaving the directory entirely, your association may let you choose which details a directory can show.
- On the same page, if your association allows field-level choices, you will see What information would you like to appear in our membership directory?, followed by one tick box for each field your association lets members hide.
- Tick a field to include it in your directory listing, or untick it to hide it.
- Save your changes.
Result
A field you leave ticked continues to appear in your directory entry. A field you untick is removed from your entry. Hiding a field does not change directory search results; it only changes what someone sees when they open your entry directly.
If phone number is one of the fields offered, the directory shows your preferred phone number. That value is usually linked to the main mobile number on your contact record, so changing it here may not stick while that link remains. If the change does not stick, update your mobile number directly on your contact record.
If your organization has a primary contact, that contact’s email address can still appear in the directory even though you do not see an individual opt-out for it. Not every email field shown in a directory is one you can hide yourself.
Tip
If your association later adds a new field to this list, that field starts out shown for every member, including you. It stays shown until each member unticks it. If a detail you thought you had hidden appears again after your association changes its directory field settings, check this list again.
Choosing Directory Options While You Apply
If your association’s application form includes a directory-options step, you make the same kind of choice while you apply: you either opt out entirely or choose which fields show. You make that choice before your membership or directory entry exists. The choice on the application form is controlled separately from the one you see later when you update your membership, so the two can differ. To double-check or change your choice after your membership is active, use Update Membership Info instead of assuming your application choice is final.

You reach this control from your membership overview, under the option to update your membership’s information. To make this choice while applying instead, see Fill Out and Submit Your Application Form. If you administer these settings for your association rather than using them as a member, see the directory listing options configuration topic.
