Contact roles show what someone does for an organization, such as billing contact or primary contact. Your association may also use those roles to control what someone can do on the Portal. You can view role names on the Portal, but Portal members cannot create, change, or delete roles.

See a Colleague's Role

You can find contact roles in your organization’s people list.

  1. Go to My Profile › My Organization's Contacts.
  2. Find the person in the list. Their current roles at your organization appear by name in the Role(s) column.

Result

You see each person’s role names from your association’s list of contact roles. If a person has more than one role, all of their roles are listed.

Prerequisites

  • You are signed in to the Portal, and your contact role gives you permission to view your organization’s contacts. This is the same permission that lets you see the people list.

What a Role Can Mean for What Someone Can Do

Your association may use contact roles to control what a colleague can do for your organization on the Portal, such as editing people or managing sub-organizations. One role type is especially important: when your association marks a role as administrative, anyone with that role automatically gets every organization permission, regardless of the role’s specific permission settings. If a colleague can do more than the role’s permissions suggest, an administrative role is a likely reason.

What You Cannot Do

Association staff set up contact roles in the Console, including role names and the permissions each role carries. On the Portal, you can view and list roles by name, but you cannot create a new role, change an existing role, or delete a role. If a role’s name or behavior needs to change, ask your association’s staff.

Assigning a role to a person is different from defining a role. Role assignment happens at the organization level: if your permissions include managing your organization’s people, you can assign one of your association’s existing roles to a newly added colleague from Manage Your Organization's People. You still cannot create, change, or delete the roles themselves.
