Rhythm gives you three quick ways to move around without searching again. Use the application list to open another application, Recently Visited Records to return to something you opened earlier, and record links to go straight to a record wherever it lives. This page explains how each option works and why some clicks open a different application.
You sign in once for every application's Console, so Rhythm does not ask for your password again when you move between applications. Each application still checks your access; see How the Console Decides What You Can See.
Prerequisites
- You are signed in to the Console, and the top bar shows your current Rhythm account.
- Save your work before you move. Opening another application reloads the whole page, and Rhythm does not warn you about unsaved changes.
- Use Google Chrome. The Console is optimized for Chrome, and full support in other browsers, including Microsoft Edge, is limited. In an unsupported browser, a link that opens another application can fail, including showing a blank page.
Open Another Application
- Go to Top navigation bar › [current application title], such as Membership & Committees. The drop-down opens and shows Loading applications... while Rhythm checks which applications you can use.
- Find the application you want. The larger column lists every application you can open for this Rhythm account, including Home, in alphabetical order. The Recent Apps column on the right shows up to six applications you used recently, newest first, but it leaves out your current application and Home.
- Click the application in either column.
Result
The application's Console opens in the same browser tab, on its home page, for the Rhythm account you are working in. Rhythm also moves that application to the top of your Recent Apps list, which you see from every other application.
Things to know:
- Only applications you can open are listed. If an application is missing, your Rhythm account does not have it, or you do not have permission to use it. The list does not show which reason applies. See How the Console Decides What You Can See.
- The list always opens applications in the same tab. The Open Apps in Separate Tab setting in your user menu does not apply here. It applies to links inside pages that take you from one application to another. See Use the User Menu: Privacy Mode, Record Filter, and Tips.
- No recent applications yet. The column shows No recent applications. until you have used another application in this Rhythm account.
- Recent applications are kept separately for each Rhythm account. Your sandbox has its own list.
- Rhythm caches data to load faster. The first application you open in a session can open the application you used most recently instead of the one you just selected, because Rhythm kept that earlier context to improve performance. If that happens, choose the application again.
Go Back to a Record You Opened Earlier
Rhythm remembers the records you open and offers them from every page, in every application. For example, a contact you opened in Membership also appears in Events.
- Go to Top navigation bar › Recent Items (clock icon), or press Ctrl+L anywhere in the Console. The Recently Visited Records drop-down opens. On narrow screens, the words Recent Items appear beside the clock.
- Look through the list. It shows your ten most recent records, newest first. Each entry shows the record's name, what it belongs to when that applies, such as the event for a registration, and a line such as Data Import · 5 minutes ago.
- To find an older record, type part of its name in Search recent items. The search ignores capitals, matches anywhere in the name, and checks every record Rhythm remembers for you, up to 750. It then shows the ten newest matches.
- Click the record.
Result
The record opens. If you first opened it in the application you are using now, it opens there. If you opened it in another application, that application's Console opens with the record, using a full page load in the same tab.
Contacts and organizations work differently. Most applications have their own view of these records, so they open in the application you are using now. In the few applications that have no contact pages, such as Home, the record opens in the application where you viewed it.
Things to know:
- The list is separate for each Rhythm account. Records you opened in your sandbox appear only when you are working in your sandbox.
- Opening a record again moves it to the top. The same record appears only once.
- The list is read once per page. The drop-down loads your list the first time you open it on a page and keeps that copy. Records you open after that appear the next time you reload the page or move to another application.
- You cannot remove entries. There is no way to clear the list or delete one entry.
- Deleted records stay listed. When you choose one, that record page shows its own message that it cannot be found.
- Access is checked again. If you no longer have access, Rhythm refuses the record even if you opened it last week. The record's page decides access, not the list.
- Ctrl+L belongs to the Console. While a Console page is open, Ctrl+L opens your recent records instead of selecting the browser's address bar.
- Two tabs at once. If you work in two applications in two tabs at the same time, each tab saves your list as a whole, so a record you opened in one tab can be missing from the list.
Follow a Link to a Record
Records in Rhythm often point to records in other applications. An invoice names a contact, a registration names an event, and a task names the record it is about. When you click one of these links, Rhythm takes you to the record's page in the application that owns that kind of record.

B -->|The one you are in| C[The record opens on this page]
B -->|Another application| D[That application's Console loads with the record]
B -->|A contact or organization| E[Opens in your current application where it has contact pages]
A record link opens a different Console when another application owns the record. When that happens:
- The whole page reloads, and anything unsaved on the page you left is lost.
- The other application checks your access as it opens. If you do not have access to it, you see its Access Denied message. See I Get "Access Denied" or a Button Is Greyed Out.
- The link does not choose a Rhythm account. The record opens in the Rhythm account this browser last used. That is usually the account you were in, unless you switched to another Rhythm account or sandbox in another tab. Check the account name in the top bar. See Switch to Another Account or Sandbox.
Bookmark or Share a Page
You can bookmark any Console page, paste a Console address into the browser, share it with a colleague, or refresh the page you are on. Rhythm opens the page directly. A colleague who opens your link still needs access to that page and that record. If you are signed out, Rhythm asks you to sign in first and then continues to the link.
Refreshing also picks up any new release of the Console because the Console's start page is never cached.
If Something Goes Wrong
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| An application you need is not in the list | Your Rhythm account does not have it, or you do not have permission to use it | Ask your administrator. See How the Console Decides What You Can See |
| Loading applications... does not go away | No Rhythm account is selected, or the list could not work out your access | Check that the top bar shows a Rhythm account, then reload the page |
| No recently visited records. | You have not opened records in this Rhythm account yet, or the list could not be read | Reload the page and open the drop-down again |
| Loading recent items... does not go away | No Rhythm account is selected | Choose a Rhythm account; see Sign In and Choose Your Account |
| A record you just opened is not in the list | The drop-down is still using the copy it loaded earlier | Reload the page |
| A link opens a blank page, or the page keeps reloading | The link could not be matched to a record page | Use the browser's Back button or type another address. Open the record from its application instead, and report the link to Support |
| Access Denied after following a link | You may not have access to the application or the page that shows the record | See I Get "Access Denied" or a Button Is Greyed Out |
| The record opened in the wrong Rhythm account | The browser's current Rhythm account changed in another tab | Switch back to the right Rhythm account and open the link again |
| You are unexpectedly signed out, especially after opening several contact records in separate tabs and then moving into other applications from each one in quick succession | Working from many tabs at once, or moving into another application from several tabs in a row, can intermittently sign you out. This can also happen more generally when many record pages load at once and the Console's own session protection intervenes | Sign back in. Where you can, work from the target application's own query or search results instead of opening several contact records in separate tabs and jumping into other applications from each one |
| Pages stop loading, redirect somewhere else, or ask you to sign in again after you opened many record pages in separate tabs | Loading too many pages at once can trigger session protection that interrupts navigation | Close some tabs and try again, opening fewer at a time |
| The Console behaves oddly, such as failing to search or opening the wrong module, right after you return to it following a long period of inactivity | The Console can resume in a stale state after extended inactivity | Refresh the page before you search or switch applications or accounts |
| Search or navigation hangs with a spinner the first time you sign in | Observed cases were resolved by reloading the page, opening Rhythm in a private/incognito window, or clearing the browser cache | Try reloading, then a private window, then clearing the browser cache if it persists |
| A loading problem seems specific to you rather than everyone | To narrow it down, clear your browser cache, try an incognito or private window, and try another browser or device | If the problem follows you across browsers and devices, it is more likely an account or platform issue; tell Rhythm Support what you tried |
When you contact Support, include the link or the page you started from, the application and Rhythm account shown in the top bar, the time, and any message.
