Opening a result from a directory search shows that member’s entry, using the directory design your association chose.

Open an Entry

  1. From the directory search results, select the entry you want to view.

Result

The entry opens in place of the search results. You can see where you are in the results list and return to the results when you need to.

What a Member's Entry Shows

Unless your association created a custom layout for this directory, a member’s entry uses Rhythm’s ready-made layout, which can include:

  • Photograph, name, job title, and location
  • Email address and phone number, when published
  • The member’s organization, and that organization’s parent organization, if it has one
  • Membership type, join date, and expiration date, when your association also tracks membership for the person shown

You see only the fields your association’s directory makes available. Everything else on the record stays private. A field included in your association’s chosen layout can still appear on the entry, even if it was not selected separately for publishing.

An organization’s entry and an individual’s entry do not have to use the same design. Your association can show different fields for each type, so an organization’s entry might show a primary contact email address while an individual’s entry has no email field.

The organization on a person’s entry comes from the organization tied to that person’s membership, such as through their membership order, application, or imported membership data. If the organization changes on the person’s own record, the directory can keep showing the previous organization, including its website, until the organization on the membership is updated.

If an entry shows an organization’s logo as a broken image, the image on the organization’s own record is usually broken. It does not mean the directory failed to show an image that works elsewhere.

Tip

An entry can show a member’s organization even when the directory search does not search by organization. Showing the organization on the entry and searching by it are separate settings.

Sending a Message

If your association has turned on messaging for this directory, an entry can let you send the listed member a message without showing their email address. The message goes out from a system address instead of your own, so the recipient cannot identify you from the message’s From address. The same privacy works in both directions: if someone messages you this way, the email you receive does not show their personal email address either. Rhythm keeps directory messaging anonymous on purpose, so showing the sender’s own address instead is a feature request for your association to consider, not a bug to report.

If an Entry Will Not Open

If an entry cannot be opened, you will see a message saying it could not be opened, and you can return to your results. This can happen when the result you selected does not fully identify who it was for.

  • Add a Member Directory to a Portal Page

Place the Membership Directory block on a Portal page so members and visitors can search it, and know what happens when the page does not name a directory.

Mark a member's own record so your association's directories leave them out, when the member asks by phone or email instead of doing it themselves.
