When your association uses BluePay as its payment processor, you pay on a BluePay payment page with a credit card or bank account, also called an electronic check. You might see this page when you pay an invoice, register for an event, or check out an order your association set up to charge through BluePay.
This article explains which payment types BluePay accepts and what to do when a payment is not approved.
Prerequisites
Your association uses BluePay as the payment processor for the page where you are paying.
This Is a One-Time Payment
When you pay on a BluePay page, BluePay charges you once for that specific payment. BluePay does not save your card or bank account for Rhythm to charge again later.
If your association lets you save a payment method for recurring charges, you do that on a different payment page with a different processor, such as Authorize.Net, Stripe, or Rhythm Payments. If you need to save a payment method, see Save a Card or Bank Account with Authorize.Net or Save a Card or Bank Account with Stripe.
Pay with a Card or Bank Account
- Open the payment page your association gave you.
- Choose card or bank account, if the page gives you a choice.
- Enter your card details, or enter your bank account and routing information for an electronic check.
- Submit the payment.
Result
BluePay processes the payment. If BluePay approves it, your payment goes through and your association is notified.
Warning
BluePay accepts only a credit card or bank account, also called an electronic check, on this kind of page. If a payment page tries to submit any other payment type, BluePay refuses it before the payment is attempted.
If Your Payment Is Not Approved
If BluePay does not approve your transaction, Rhythm shows the failed payment with the status and message BluePay returned. Rhythm does not rewrite that message, so the wording you see for a declined card, an incorrect bank account number, or another refusal comes directly from BluePay.
If your payment is not approved:
- Check the card or bank account details you entered for typos, especially the card number, expiration date, and security code, or the bank routing and account numbers.
- If BluePay's message gives a specific reason, such as insufficient funds or an incorrect number, correct that issue and try again.
- If the message does not explain the problem, or the payment keeps failing after you check your details, contact your card issuer or bank, or contact your association for help completing the payment another way.
- A status of Returned on a bank account payment means the electronic check was sent back, similar to a bounced check, and cannot be processed. BluePay's own documentation on electronic check returns lists the common reasons this happens.
- BluePay's message often matches a specific code in BluePay's own error-message documentation. If the message you see does not give you enough detail, your association can look up the exact code there.
Tip
Your association's support team cannot see BluePay's detailed decline reason for your specific payment attempt. That detail is in BluePay's merchant account, which only your association's BluePay administrator can open. If you need more than the message shown here, ask your association to check there.
No Card-Reader Option for In-Person BluePay Payments
Rhythm does not offer a card-reader integration for taking BluePay payments in person, such as with a physical card reader at an on-site registration desk. On-site payments need to go through a BluePay payment page like this one instead.
