An application that requires references shows them on its own References tab after each requested reference becomes a record for the referee to answer.
When to Use This
Use this page to see whether an applicant's references have come in, follow up on the ones that have not, or open a specific reference to view the referee's details.
Prerequisites
- You need permission to view applications. There is no separate permission for references, so anyone who can view an application can see and open its references.
See Every Reference on an Application
- Find and open the application.
- Select the References tab.
Result
The table shows every reference on the application, including Type, Name, Email, Phone Number, and Status for each one. Status is Pending, Completed, or Declined. Select a referee's name to open that reference. You can sort the table by any column by selecting its heading, such as Status, to group pending references together.
Tip
The References tab appears only after at least one reference record exists for the application. If the application process requires references but no records have been created yet, such as when the application has not been paid for, the tab does not appear. From this page, that looks the same as an application process that does not require references.
Open One Reference
- From the References tab, select the referee's name.
Result
The reference page shows Applicant:, Submitted:, Status:, the reference Type: and Process:, and the referee's First Name: and Last Name:. When they are recorded, it also shows Email Address: and Phone Number:. The Custom Fields tab shows any custom field values stored on the record.
Warning
Submitted: is the date the reference record was created, not the date the referee answered. If the referee completed the reference, check Completed: on the same card for the date they answered.
Warning
Selecting Resend Email currently does not send an email, even though Rhythm shows a message saying the email was resent. If you need a referee to receive another copy of the request, do not rely on this button alone.
Tip
Select View Application or the Applicant: link on the reference page to return to the application it supports.

References are set up ahead of time as reference types and processes. Those settings decide what the applicant is asked to name and what each referee is asked to answer. Finding and managing the application itself is a separate task.
