Some portal pages show information that belongs to you personally, such as membership renewals, event registrations, or invoices. Rhythm needs to know who you are before it can show those pages, so the portal asks you to sign in first.

This article explains why you see that sign-in prompt, what happens when your sign-in is not connected to a member record yet, and how one link can sign you in and open a specific page.

Prerequisites

  • You need a sign-in the association has set up for its portal. That might be a password you created earlier, a social sign-in, or a single sign-on connection. If you have never signed in before, see Create Your Contact the First Time You Sign In and Verify Your Email Address to Continue for the steps that come after your first sign-in.

Some portal pages show your personal information, including your membership renewals, event registrations, or invoices. Rhythm needs to know who you are before it can show that page, so it asks you to sign in first if you have not already.

This article explains why that sign-in prompt appears, what happens if Rhythm cannot connect your sign-in to a member record yet, and how one link can sign you in and take you straight to a specific page.

Prerequisites

  • You need a sign-in the association has set up for its portal, whether that is a password you created earlier or a social or single sign-on connection. If you have never signed in before, see Create Your Contact the First Time You Sign In and Verify Your Email Address to Continue for the steps that come after your first sign-in.
  • If the association offers Google sign-in, it has to be turned on before that option works. If you do not see it, the association has not enabled it yet.
  • If you have never signed in to the portal before, start from the association's main portal login page and choose Forgot Password. Use the email address the association already has on file for you instead of creating a separate account.

Why You Are Asked to Sign In

The association can require sign-in on pages that show your records. Depending on how the page is set up, it may also require an existing member record before it opens. When you open that kind of page while signed out, the portal checks your browser and sends you to sign in before it shows anything. Pages that are open to everyone skip this check. For a simple event, whether the "Register for Event" page asks you to sign in depends on that page's own login setting, which the association configures separately for that page.

You can usually sign in with a portal password or, when the association has enabled it, Google social sign-in. Both options take you into the same account, so using one instead of the other is not a problem by itself. If you can sign in directly on the portal but have trouble with a sign-in button on the association's own website, the issue is usually how that website handles signing you in and out, not your portal account. If the association changes how the sign-in or sign-up page looks or reads, that may require help from Rhythm rather than a setting the association can edit directly.

After you sign in, the portal is intended to return you to the page you originally opened. Members have reported landing on the portal home page instead after signing in from a link to a specific protected page, even though a later update was intended to return members to the page they requested. Because that experience has not always been consistent, open the page again if you land on the home page instead. A more recent update was reported to preserve the destination for links to individual product pages, so a signed-out visitor who clicks one of those links returns to the product page, rather than the home page, after signing in.

The page you reach right after sign-in, including the Home navigation item, depends on a home or welcome page address that is set up and currently published. If that address was changed, or the page it pointed to was unpublished or removed, you may see an authenticated-redirect message that never finishes. Home may also stop going anywhere until the association corrects and republishes the page at that address.

The same rule applies to a portal link you open while signed out: signing in is intended to return you to that same address instead of a general starting point. Whether that works consistently also depends on where the link leads. Links to individual product pages have been reported to return correctly, while links into other areas, such as events, the career center, or membership, have not always returned members to the original page after signing in.

Warning

Returning you to the exact page you started from does not always work yet. For a protected product or store page specifically, the current behavior is to send you to the portal home page afterward rather than back to that page. This is a known gap, not something you have done wrong. Reports about event registration links and other protected pages are mixed: some describe this being fixed, and others describe it still happening, so treat the return-to-page behavior as inconsistent for now.

The portal does not have a built-in way to show a pop-up message right when you sign in, such as your membership status or a renewal prompt. If the association wants you to see that information immediately, it usually sets up the page you land on after signing in to show it instead, such as a membership overview page.

If Your Sign-In Has No Member Record Yet

Signing in confirms who you are, but it does not automatically connect you to a specific member record in the association's database. The first time you use a new sign-in, or when the portal cannot confirm the connection, you go to a sign-up step instead of the page you requested.

A page that shows your own records is marked by the association as needing sign-in, with or without an existing member record depending on how the page is set up. When you open that page while signed out, the portal checks your browser and sends you to sign in before showing anything. Pages with no sign-in requirement skip this check entirely.

After you sign in successfully, the portal is meant to bring you back to the page you originally asked for. Members have reported landing on the portal home page instead of the specific protected page they were trying to reach, while a later support report described a fix meant to send members back to the requested page. Because those reports do not describe one consistent experience, do not assume you will always land exactly where you started. If you land somewhere else, navigate to the page you wanted again.

If Your Sign-In Has No Member Record Yet

Signing in confirms who you are, but it does not by itself connect you to a specific member record in the association's database. The first time you use a new sign-in, or if the portal cannot confirm the connection, you are sent to a sign-up step instead of the page you requested.

  1. Open the link to the protected page, or sign in from the portal directly.
  2. If your sign-in has no linked member record, the association's portal sends you to a sign-up page instead of the page you originally wanted.
  3. Complete what the sign-up page asks for so your sign-in can be connected to your member record.

Result

After your sign-in is connected to an active member record, later attempts to open a protected page succeed without this detour, subject to the other checks described in Create Your Contact the First Time You Sign In and Verify Your Email Address to Continue.

If you do not have a portal account yet, this same setup flow connects your new sign-in to your existing record instead of starting from scratch. Enter your identifying details, and the setup process can find and link the record the association already has for you so your history is not lost.

Tip

If you later start signing in with a different email address, such as after changing jobs, you can recover your existing record the same way. Sign up again with the new email, and enter identifying information during setup so the portal finds and links your existing record rather than creating a new one.

If you started your sign-up from an event's integrated registration page, completing it is expected to bring you back to that same registration flow instead of the general portal account home page.

If the original link included extra information, such as a code from a marketing email, the portal carries it to the sign-up page so it is not lost.

If you started from a microsite or an integrated event that has its own redirect address, the portal returns you there after you finish signing up instead of using the association's general default redirect. The default redirect configured for the association's account is used only when there is no originating address to return to.

Warning

If Rhythm cannot confirm which member record belongs to your sign-in, such as when a lookup fails, you are treated as if you do not have a linked record yet. Instead of showing an error, the portal sends you to sign up. If this keeps happening and you believe your account is already connected, contact the association for help instead of repeating the sign-up step.

Once your sign-in is connected to an active member record, later attempts to open a protected page succeed without this detour, subject to the other checks described in Create Your Contact the First Time You Sign In and Verify Your Email Address to Continue.

Any extra information carried in the original link, such as a code from a marketing email, is passed to the sign-up page so it is not lost during this detour.

Warning

If Rhythm cannot confirm which member record your sign-in belongs to, such as when a lookup fails, you are treated as if you have no linked record yet. The portal sends you to sign up instead of showing an error. If this keeps happening even though you believe your account is already connected, contact the association for help rather than repeating the sign-up step.

Following a Link That Signs You in and Opens a Specific Page

Some links are built to sign you in and then open one specific page instead of the portal home page. When you use that kind of link:

  1. Follow the link. If you are not already signed in, you are sent to sign in first.
  2. Once you are signed in and pass the usual checks described above, including a connected member record and any other requirements for that page, the portal opens the specific page the link named.

If the page named in the link no longer exists, you see whatever the site shows for an address it does not recognize. Opening the link gives you only the access the destination page already allows; the link does not bypass any restriction on that page. For example, a link to a specific invoice is built by adding that invoice's identifier to the portal's invoice-viewing address. Opening it still requires you to sign in, just like any other protected page.

Invoices, Applications, and Other Records You Might Open

Pages that show your own records cover several kinds of information, and a few behave in ways worth knowing before you rely on them:

  • Certification applications. If the association has set up a My Certification Applications entry, you can review applications you have submitted there. A draft or in-progress application is generally not listed there. To continue one, go back to the application or program flow you started, and you are prompted to resume where you left off.
  • Event registrations. To review or change an existing registration from the portal, the association needs to have added the Registration History page. If that page is not there, the association has not set it up yet. If a registration is started while you are signed in, saved as a draft, and later edited to add a different participant, the resulting receipts and invoices can still be linked to you as the original contact rather than to that participant.
  • Exam registrations. For a Live offering, the registration screen shows a Date and Time based on how the event is configured. For a Remote Proctored offering, it shows an Expiration Date instead. Neither value is necessarily the exact appointment you will keep with an outside proctoring service, so confirm your scheduled exam time with the proctor directly.
  • Invoices and payments. Whether you can see an invoice billed to your organization depends on your role with that organization, not only on who created the invoice. Organization administrators cannot currently look up or pay invoices in the portal on behalf of individual contacts linked to the organization. Applying a credit memo to an invoice closes its balance, but it does not remove the invoice from your portal payment history. Older or imported financial records can appear under "Archived/Older Payments" even when they were not an actual payment, such as an imported record for a historical invoice that shows a zero-dollar amount. Invoice pages do not have their own Print button; use your browser's print function to print one. On the My Orders page, a Make a Payment button can appear for an organization's order even when you are not a billing contact for it. Selecting it can open a blank page because there is nothing payable in your context. Some associations set up the page you land on after signing in to show an alert when you have an open invoice. If a financial alert or balance link leads to a blank page instead of your invoices, the association has not finished configuring where that link should go. If you paid for an order at checkout and want the invoice afterward, you do not need it emailed to you separately. You can come back to the portal and download it from there; the confirmation message for your order may point you to that step.
  • Organization contacts. To review or update your organization's contacts, look for a dedicated portal page. You do not need to go through membership renewal to do it.
  • Directories. A member directory page depends on its directory component having a valid directory configured. If a directory page stays on a loading spinner or shows an error instead of listing anyone, the association needs to check that setting.

Some links are built to sign you in and then take you straight to one particular page instead of the portal home page. If you follow such a link:

  1. Follow the link. If you are not already signed in, you are sent to sign in first.
  2. Once you are signed in and pass the usual checks described above, including a connected member record and any other requirements for that page, the portal opens the specific page the link named.

If the page the link named no longer exists, you see whatever the site shows for an address it does not recognize instead of the intended page. Reaching this page grants you nothing beyond what the page's own access rules already allow; the link itself does not bypass any restriction on the destination.

If Something Goes Wrong

What you see What it means and what to do
You are sent to sign in before opening a page The page shows information tied to you personally, so the association requires you to sign in before viewing it.
After signing in, you land on the portal's home page instead of the page you wanted Other members have reported this, and the behavior may depend on how you arrived. Open the page again from the original link.
You see "Performing authenticated redirect..." and it never finishes, or Home doesn't go anywhere The portal's configured home or welcome page address may no longer point to a published page. The association needs to correct and republish the page at that address.
You are sent to sign in before opening a page The page shows information tied to you personally, and the association requires sign-in before showing it.
After signing in, you land on the portal's home page instead of the page you wanted Other members have reported this, and it may not always be fixed depending on how you arrived. Open the page again from where you found the original link.
You are sent to a sign-up page instead of the page you asked for Your sign-in is not yet connected to an active member record. Complete the sign-up page's steps; if you believe you should already be connected, contact the association.
A link that was supposed to open a specific page opens something else The destination page may no longer exist. Contact whoever gave you the link.
You are signed in, but the page still shows a sign-in button Some associations use a public page as the portal home, and its sign-in button can keep showing after you have signed in. Look for a separate members-only home page, or ask the association to add one.
A membership or profile page unexpectedly shows a sign-in or create-account area This can happen when that component is placed on a page outside its usual context. Ask the association to adjust the component.
You update your payment card, but still get reminders about the old one expiring The new expiration date does not always save to your membership record right away. Contact the association so they can check your record directly.
A login-required event page shows a blank white screen with no sign-in box This is a known, intermittent issue. Refresh the page or reopen the link; contact the association if it continues.
The Join or Renew page fails with "Unable to initialize web form" This can happen when you are connected to a VPN. Turn off the VPN and try again.
