The Membership Revenue Summary shows the revenue your association brought in from memberships, chapter dues, section dues, and add-ons for the period you choose. Each total appears in a card you can open to review the invoices behind it. This is Membership’s built-in revenue report, and you open it from the Reports hub.

Prerequisites

  • You do not need a special permission to open the Reports hub or the revenue summary today. Anyone signed in to your account can open it.

Open the Reports Hub and the Revenue Summary

  1. Go to Membership & Committees › Reports. The hub opens on the tab you last used in this browser: Built In Reports, Your Reports, or Team Reports.
  2. On Built In Reports, choose Membership Revenue Summary.

Result

The report opens for the current calendar month on the accrual basis. It shows a Total Revenue tile, a Membership Dues tile, and one card for each product type with revenue in the period: Membership Packages, Chapter Dues, Section Dues, and Add Ons.

A Chapter Dues, Section Dues, or Add On Revenue tile appears only when that type has revenue in the period. If the period has no membership package revenue, the report shows No membership revenue found. instead of tiles or cards.

Choose Accrual or Cash, and the Period

  1. On the report, choose Customize.
  2. Under How should we display revenue?, choose Accrual to count each invoice line at its full amount, whether it has been paid or not. Choose Cash to count only the amount actually paid on each line.
  3. Set Start Date: and End Date: for the period you want. Rhythm counts an invoice line when its date falls on or between those two dates.
  4. Choose Update Report.

Result

The report runs again using the basis and period you chose. The Basis: and Dates: lines above the tiles show those choices.

Warning

The Start Date and End Date fields do not check whether the end date comes after the start date. If you enter an end date earlier than the start date, the report finds nothing and shows No membership revenue found. instead of an error. If you clear either date and choose Update Report, Rhythm fills in the first or last day of the current month instead of leaving the field empty, so check the Dates: line after updating if you meant to leave a date open-ended.

Neither basis gives you a single payment-date column. A line is counted whether or not it has been paid, and even on the cash basis, one line can be paid across more than one date. Because of that, there is often no single date that correctly represents the line. If you need to calculate section remittances by when payment was actually received and no report gives you that, a membership's join or renewal date can serve as a stand-in. Just be aware that some amounts may be remitted before the payment behind them is actually collected.

Trace a Total to Its Invoices

Every dollar amount in a product table is a link.

  1. On any product row inside a card, choose the amount in the total column.
  2. In the dialog that opens, review the invoice lines: date, invoice number, customer, join date, expiration date, total, and amount paid.
  3. Choose an Invoice # to open that invoice in the Finance & Billing area, or choose an organization’s name to open its record in a new tab.

Result

The dialog lists the exact invoice lines the report counted for that product, using the basis you chose. The Total and Amount Paid columns always appear, no matter which basis is active.

Tip

A contact customer’s name in this dialog does not open anything; only an organization customer’s name links out. If you need to open a contact who was billed directly, look them up separately.

Refine the Question as a Query, or Download the Raw Lines

Two toolbar actions let you work beyond the summary:

  • Open Query takes you to the Finance & Billing area’s Query Center with this report’s exact question already queued. From there, you can add conditions, choose different columns, or save it as your own query. Choosing this leaves the Membership Console.
  • Download Raw Data builds a spreadsheet in your browser from every invoice line the last run counted, with one column for each field the question returned. The download uses the basis and period from the last report run; it does not run a fresh question.

Warning

The downloaded file has been seen with values in the wrong column, especially after you customize the report for cash and change the date range. The Bill To Organization value has also appeared in different formats between rows. Skim the columns against a few source invoices before you rely on the file for reconciliation.

Neither this report nor its raw data download cross-checks successful payments against memberships that are still inactive or otherwise unadvanced. If your team needs to catch renewals or new memberships that were paid but never activated, build a query in the Query Center that compares payment records to membership status instead of relying on this report alone.

Save Your Customization for Next Time

After you customize the basis or period, Save Report and Reset Report Parameters appear in the toolbar. Saving lets you name the configuration and choose whether it is personal to you or shared with your team. The saved report then appears under Your Reports or Team Reports on the Reports hub. Reset Report Parameters discards your customization and any report you saved during this visit, then returns the report to the current month on the accrual basis.

A Few Things to Know Before You Rely on These Numbers

  • Revenue counts by invoice date, not by when it was recognized. These figures are invoiced amounts, or amounts paid on the cash basis, not a revenue-recognition calculation.
  • Currencies are added together as plain numbers. If your association bills in more than one currency, the totals combine those amounts without converting them, so a mixed-currency total may not mean what it appears to mean.
  • Customizing more than once in the same visit can make Section Dues disagree with its own card. If you customize the report a second time without leaving the page, the Section Dues tile can add the new period’s total on top of the previous one. The Section Dues card underneath rebuilds correctly. If a Section Dues figure looks too high, refresh the page or reopen the report before trusting it.
  • The Add On Revenue tile and card may never appear, even when your association sells add-ons, because of how this report currently classifies add-on revenue. If you rely on add-on figures, cross-check them with a query rather than using this report alone.
  • Bundled dues may appear as one summed line, not two. Membership package dues and chapter dues can be combined into a single displayed charge, both on invoices and in related query output, using inline bundling. Because of that, a total that looks unusually large may include more than one dues charge added together. Older invoices from before a correction to this bundling may in some cases show the full bundled amount attributed to membership rather than split across the chapter and package amounts, and those historical figures cannot be corrected retroactively.
  • This report is informational, not a closing tool. Use it to get a sense of membership revenue for a period. It is not designed for month-end close, reconciliation, or auditing workflows.

How Deferred Revenue Interacts with These Numbers

A membership invoice's revenue is treated as unrecognized for as long as term months remain unserved, because the service has not been fully delivered yet. Some associations defer part of what this report counts for exactly that reason, which is one more way these totals can differ from a recognition-based view of revenue.

You control deferral on the membership package itself. Open the package's financial configuration and turn off the Deferred Revenue option if you do not want it. When deferral is on, timing depends on the package's "sell for next month after" setting. If that cutoff falls mid-month, a purchase near the end of the month can have its membership start the following month, which shifts when the revenue is treated as deferred and when it appears in your recognition schedule. Deferral also changes downstream accounting work, such as adding steps to external accounting reconciliation, so weigh that against the benefit of matching revenue to the term before turning it on broadly.

When payment is received, Rhythm posts to the revenue account configured on the membership package by default. That can conflict with what you expect if the package accounting setup and deferred-revenue configuration are not aligned. If some membership fees post to the subledger differently than others, check your business-unit settings and package mapping, because differences there are a common cause. Reinstating a membership for a prior term recognizes any elapsed deferral periods together in the month you record the reinstatement payment, rather than spreading them across the original months. For example, a September reinstatement of a term that began in June posts four deferral entries that month to cover June through September. To confirm proration-driven deferred revenue is posting correctly, post the batch and compare the resulting subledger entries to the Dues Proration schedule. If the current month matches the schedule, later months should match it too.

If Something Goes Wrong

What you see What to do
The report never leaves Gathering data... just a moment... The underlying question failed to run. Reload the page and try again.
No membership revenue found. when you expected results Check that your end date is on or after your start date, and that the period has membership invoice activity.
A figure looks doubled after customizing You customized more than once in the same visit; reload the report to get a clean total.
