An organization’s directory listing can show the average rating from rated comments visitors leave. Rhythm keeps that rating current automatically, so you do not need to recalculate it by hand. This article explains which comments count and when the rating changes.
What the Rating Is Built From
Rhythm keeps a running total and count of an organization’s rated comments, then uses those numbers to show the average rating. It stores the total and count on the organization record instead of checking every comment each time. Because those numbers stay on the organization, the directory listing can show the rating right away, even when the organization has many comments.
If an organization had rated comments before this running-total tracking existed, it may not show an average rating at first. The rating starts updating when someone adds or edits a comment on that organization, but Rhythm does not automatically add earlier rated comments into the total.
When someone adds, changes, or removes a rated comment on an organization’s directory listing, Rhythm updates that organization’s total and count. If someone removes a rated comment or edits it to remove the rating, Rhythm lowers the total and count the same way it raises them when someone adds a rated comment. The rating reflects the rated comments that currently exist, not every rating ever left.
Only comments on an organization directory count toward an organization’s rating. Comments on other listing types do not affect it. Text-only comments and other comments without a rating do not trigger a recalculation because they cannot change the total.
Warning
Rhythm does not check whether a comment’s rating is within the normal scale before adding it to the total. If a rating outside the expected range reaches an organization’s comments, Rhythm includes that value in the average, which can make the displayed rating higher or lower than expected.
Why a Comment Might Not Have Changed the Rating
If the rating does not reflect a comment you just added, first check whether the comment included a rating and whether someone added it directly instead of through a data import.
You may also notice that the rating stars do not respond to hovering or clicking at first. In some cases, the rating area needs focus before the stars respond. Click the page or window, then try the stars again.
Comments added by a data import never affect an organization’s rating in any Rhythm account. You cannot turn this exclusion on or off, and staff do not receive a message when Rhythm skips an imported comment’s rating. If you import historical directory comments and expect them to count toward an organization’s rating, they will not. Only comments added the ordinary way trigger a recalculation.
Tip
If an organization’s rating looks wrong after bulk-loading comments, that is expected: imported comments never contribute to the rating. Add or edit a comment the ordinary way if you need the rating to reflect it.
